Dany's Pick of the Week

Printer-Friendly Format

We find rare and unusual books at estate sales almost every weekend. A few of them appeal to me for completely non-monetary reasons. This is one.

The estate belonged, quite obviously, to a teacher and a reader. The people running the sale weren't giving out any details, but the overflowing bookcases, the three pianos, and the collection of textbooks on almost every subject said that this house belonged to a woman with a lifelong love of learning and teaching.

I felt an immediate kinship with her, as I picked up book after book and said to Cindy, "I have this edition," or "We used this in my 'Women in Antiquity' class at U Mass," or "I read this - great book." Of course, if I own a book, it is almost guaranteed not to be valuable (otherwise I wouldn't own it!), so I'd put the book back down and go to the next bookcase.

Until I saw this book. I never dreamed such a thing existed - Winnie The Pooh ... in Latin. Latin!

I don't know, really, why I am so tickled by this. And it isn't very valuable. And I remember about 5 words of Latin, so I can't even read it (though I can look at the pictures - it retains many original illustrations). Even the Amazon reviews are a hoot:

"Statements sound much more grand in Latin: 'Ior mi,' dixit sollemniter, 'egomet, Winnie ille Pu, caudam tuam reperiam.' which means, 'Eeyore,' he said solemnly, 'I, Winnie-the-Pooh, will find your tail for you.'"

Ave, Pu!

Haha so sweet Dany. It is nice to have some things that we just "like". No agenda, no reason. Thanks for sharing!
